Referee Corner

To all soccer parents, fans and coaches:  The referees are our kids and these refs are learning their roles.  Be courteous to them and support them as they learn by promoting good sportsmanship and being positive in your comments to them.  Being a referee is not easy, don’t make it harder.

Referees for the Tomah Youth Soccer games are paid at a rate based upon the age of the game and the responsibilities during the game.  The following amount are what the refs  are paid:

U5 to U8 - Two refs are used during these games.  Each ref makes $10.00 per game.

U9 to U10 - Two refs are used during these games.  Each ref makes what is referred to as "Age + $5.00"  Ex - If you are a ref for a U9 team you make $9.00 + $5.00 = $14.00.

U11 +  - Three refs are used for all U11 and older games.  Each of the refs receives "Age + $5.00."  The center ref receives an additional $5.00/game.  Ex - If you are an assistant ref for a U15 game you will make $15.00 + $5.00 = $20.00/game.  The center ref for the same game would make $25.00/game.

How to become a Referee.  All referees must become certified to referee games in the CRC.  Each year referees need to recertify.  We are fortunate to be able to offer these courses here in Tomah.

To become a certified referee, you must be at least 12 years old, have knowledge of the game of soccer, and be willing to learn the rules of the game.  The role of the referee is not for everyone so we strongly recommend that you referee some of the U5 to U8 games to get a feel for the role.

Referee courses are offered in the fall, PRECEDING, the season.  There fore if you want to be a referee in 2010, you must certify or recertify in the fall/winter of 2009.  There may be classes available during January/Feb/March for the following year however this is not always the case.

For additional information about being a Referee or referee class go to the website www.wisref.org

If you have any questions about becoming a referee please contact the TYSA Referee Representative, Mark Nicholson by clicking here.
